Research, publications, and feminist knowledge from Mindanao.
Four decades of feminist research, documentation, and advocacy have produced a body of knowledge on Mindanao women's conditions, labor rights, reproductive health, gender-based violence, and indigenous women's struggles. Selected outputs are listed below.
Publications and studies
WSRC's inaugural publication — one of the first systematic research outputs on the conditions of women in Mindanao. Produced in partnership with the Mindanao Sulu Secretariat for Social Action (MISSSA) following a study conducted from November 1982 to 1983.
A study examining women's health conditions across six Mindanao communities, contributing to the evidence base for reproductive health advocacy and community health programming.
Research on the use and risks of abortifacient drugs in Davao City, informing reproductive health advocacy and policy engagement.
A study on the struggles of women agricultural workers at the Dolefil pineapple plantation in Polomolok, South Cotabato — documenting strategies employed by women in their workplace struggles. A testament that united collective action is the solution to workers' legitimate demands.
Nationwide research conducted in partnership with GABRIELA-Negros, recording the narratives and experiences of women who underwent unsafe abortion. Recommended that comprehensive Reproductive Health programs be made available for all women.
Documentation of women workers' struggles in seven Sumifru packing plants in Davao de Oro — covering workplace conditions (including a body clock study showing nearly 14-hour workdays), impacts of Martial Law on labor advocates, and the effects of COVID-19 pandemic response on workers and their families. Conducted with NAMASUFA-KMU.
WSRC in the news
WSRC Executive Director Leah Emily Miñoza cited WSRC data showing an almost 800% increase in violence against women cases in Davao City from 2004 to 2012 — from 184 cases to over 1,600 — and documented five cases of domestic violence every day in the city.
Coverage of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (IDEVAW) in Davao City, featuring WSRC's data: the Davao Region accounted for 34% of the total national incidence of VAW cases, with 1,391 cases of domestic violence reported in the first 10 months of 2012.
MindaNews report citing WSRC data on the rise of VAW cases and WSRC Executive Director's statement that despite the passage of laws, violence has not been eradicated — and that the rape of children below 12 years old increased from one case in 2009 to 33 cases in 2012.
